»upon nothingness, there«
Oguz Büyükberber, clarinets & electronics
Marc Sinan, e-guitar & electronics
A duo-project by Marc Sinan and Oguz Büyükberber
How does one write or create music about something that is as poetic as it is urgent, as thoughtful as it is moving, and which carries time with and in itself? What sounds, colours, harmonies and dissonances recall all those passionate dystopias that constitute the apparent futility of the present? Access to time and space through music demands for hope. But what if hope is no longer a category – in a present without a future, liberating itself from its past?
»We lie on nothingness so soothingly / and we conceal all tears and rips«, Rainer Maria Rilke wrote in 1899 in his poem »Gott, wie begreif ich deine Stunde« [Oh God, how do I grasp your life].
A century later it is necessary to remember those cracks, to make them perceptible again
and to transfer them into music.
In »upon nothingness, there« Marc Sinan's contemporary composition encounters Oguz Büyükberber's abstract pieces, while using original historical recordings of Armenian prisoners of World War I. Fragments of anatolian music meet improvised plateaus. Abstract and yet sensual, the music of the Duo creates a space for what hardly is to be said. Büyükberber and Sinan link the apparent contradictions so skilfully that a distinctive
musical symbiosis evolves. Since many years the two musicians are bond both musically and personally; which emerges unmistakeably in this project.
»upon nothingness, there« is released by ECM, pre-release concert on October 4th 2017 at Akademie der Künste (Academy of Arts), Berlin
