Post Punk in allerbester Manier. Bio: SPRAY PAINT are a no wave punk outfit from Austin, Texas made up of Chris Stephenson (drums/vocals), Cory Plump (guitar/vocals) and George Dishner (guitar/vocals). Some of you may already know these guys from other projects such as When Dinosaurs Ruled The Earth, Expensive Shit and Dikes of Holland. Spray Paint´s buzz-sawing guitars run headlong through labyrinthine tunnels of reverb, chased down by some wildly brain-bashing drums. All three members of Spray Paint sing too, helping create an uncontrollable sense of fervour as they jostle for the words. Since forming in 2012, Spray Paint have released two LPs and 7"s through S-SRecords as well as readying an upcoming LP for Monofonus Press. They´ve wasted no time with hitting the road either, touring the US four times, most recently with their friends Protomartyr. They´ve also played at Fun Fun Fun Fest, Chaos in Tejas, Gonerfest, Cropped Out, SXSW and a live on-air performance on WFMU. This October sees Spray Paint head over to Europe for the first time, in support of their fierce new 7" EP through Upset The Rhythm, entitled ´Cussin´. Das Magazin PITCHFORK schreibt über die Band: All sorts of post-punk history gushes through the music of Austin’s Spray Paint. Every review I’ve read of them references at least a couple classic bands, and deservedly so: the trio’s frantic rants glisten with sweat generated by decades of post-punk workouts. That sweat also pushes them beyond mimicry. The exhilarating execution of their taut-yet-rubbery songs puts Spray Paint´s music squarely in the present tense. On "Cussin", from their new three-song 7-inch on Upset the Rhythm, more reference points abound. I hear "Death Valley ´69"-era Sonic Youth in the chiming guitars and all-together-now yells of George Dishner and Cory Plump, and the rough churn of Lake of Dracula in the growling, gut-punch rhythm. But again the band’s ability to create momentum, especially in the song’s grinding instrumental section, makes them sound less like a post-punk tribute than a new branch of a storied family tree—a branch that continues to grow on their next full-length, Clean Blood, Regular Acid, due on Monofonus Press in September. Bandweb: http://spraypaint.bandcamp.com/ The Rebel The Rebel is Ben Wallers (Ex-Country Teasers, Crypt The alter ego of Country Teasers’ Ben Wallers, The Rebel dates back to the tail-end of the 80s—having existed side-by-side throughout Country Teasers’ prolific career—often releasing records at a steadier clip than Waller’s main project with songs too madcap to fit into even their William-Burroughs-by-way-of-The-Residents take on country music. Wallers’ characteristic self-aware irony and surreal gender/race ruminations are still present but sitting backseat in this more fleshed out concept album about decaying conditions on the planet 3AR7H. Although Burroughs comparisons are inevitable, Northern Rocks Bear Weird Vegetable could only have been scripted by The Rebel.
