For his new creation "WERT," the choreographer Massimo Gerardi has been inspired by the juxtaposition of materialism (to have) and idealism (to be) according to the ideas of philosopher E. Fromm.
The choreographer transposes these opposites in the dance microcosm through the conflicting dichotomy artist/athlete, as dancers often have to face these two antagonistic aspects in their profession.
“To have” is represented in the piece by dynamic and athletic movements, developed in site-specific research on steps or stairs. They visualize the longing for self-representation, endurance, performance, progress, competition but also failures.
An intense relationship between the two dancers together with an introspection of the self take place on staircase-landings and surfaces, representing “to be”. Here the choreography is also based on the performers´ personal experiences : as Pina Bausch postulated, it is not only interesting to see how people move, but also what moves them.
